Kart driving position: how to adjust seat, pedals and steering wheel

Updated: 3 days ago

There's a lot of talk about setup, tyres and engine, but the first thing to tune on a kart is the driver. A wrong driving position costs precision, tires your arms and back and can even change how the chassis behaves. Here is how to find the right kart driving position, starting from seat, pedals and steering wheel.
In short The seat must hold you firmly at the hips without squeezing. With the pedals pressed fully down your legs stay slightly bent, with your hands on the wheel your arms are bent and your back stays against the seat. Spacers and inclined hubs help adjust the steering wheel. The seat position affects setup: it must be fitted carefully and measured.
Why the kart driving position matters so much
In a kart the driver is a large part of the total weight and sits almost in the middle of the chassis. That's why how and where you sit changes the weight distribution. On top of that, a comfortable position lets you control steering, throttle and brake precisely even at the end of a session, when fatigue kicks in.

The seat: the right size
The seat must hold you firmly at the hips: if you slide from side to side in corners it's too wide, if you feel pain after a few laps it's too tight. Try it sitting down with the suit and rib protector you will use on track. Maranello MT W1 resin seats come in several sizes, for example the Maranello MT W1 resin seat size 33.

The pedals: legs slightly bent
With the pedal pressed fully down your leg should stay slightly bent, never straight. A straight leg takes away sensitivity and pushes you forward in the seat under braking. Maranello pedal assemblies, including the back pedal assembly, let you adapt the pedal position to the driver.

The steering wheel: arms bent and shoulders back
With your hands on the wheel, roughly at quarter to three, your arms should stay bent and your shoulders against the seat back. If you have to lift your back to turn, the wheel is too far away. To adjust it there are steering wheel spacers, inclined spacers and the Maranello inclined steering wheel hub.

Posture on track
• Back against the seat: stay in contact with the seat, so you feel better what the kart is doing.
• Head straight and eyes far ahead: look towards the corner exit, not in front of the nose.
• Soft grip: squeezing the wheel too hard tires you and makes your driving jerky.
• Free legs: your knees must not touch the steering column or chassis tubes.
And don't forget safety: suitable suit, gloves, helmet and rib protector. You'll find everything in the guide to suit, gloves and helmet.
The most common mistakes
• Seat too wide: you move in corners and lose sensitivity.
• Straight legs: less control over throttle and brake.
• Steering wheel too far: straight arms, back off the seat and fatigue.
• Moving the seat without measuring: you change the setup without knowing it. Always note the starting position and follow the guide on how to fit a kart seat.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my kart seat is the right size?
The seat must hold you firmly at the hips without squeezing: if you move in corners it's too wide, if it hurts after a few laps it's too tight. Try it sitting down, with the suit and rib protector you use on track.
How far away should the pedals be?
With the pedal pressed fully down your leg should stay slightly bent, never straight. That way you control throttle and brake better and don't slide forward in the seat under braking.
Does moving the seat change the kart's setup?
Yes. The seat position changes the weight distribution and therefore how the kart behaves. Before you adjust the kart seat, measure and note the current position, and have it fitted by someone experienced.
