complete guide to kart seats: types, fitting and effect on setup

In karting the driver is not a passenger: they are an integral part of the kart. Their weight, their position and the way their body transmits forces to the chassis determine how the kart behaves in corners. The seat is the interface between driver and chassis: the component that turns every movement into weight transfer.

Choosing the right seat, fitting it correctly and understanding how its position affects setup is not a detail. It is setup.

In short The seat is a setup variable, not just comfort: its position and height shift weight and change how the kart behaves. Choose the size by measuring your hips in racing gear: it must hug the torso with no play and without squeezing.

Seat types: flat bottom vs round bottom

The most important distinction is not the material but the shape of the bottom:

Flat bottom: lets you mount the seat lower on the chassis, lowering the centre of gravity. It is the standard choice in competitive karting. It gives more freedom in height adjustment and more direct contact with the chassis.

Round bottom: more common in club karting. It is more comfortable but limits how low the seat can go. Less setup freedom, but enough for drivers who do not work on millimetre-precise setup.

As for material: fibreglass is the basic choice, while carbon fibre is stiffer and lighter, used in competitive karting where every gram counts.

How to choose the right size

Size is chosen by measuring the width of the driver's hips while seated, in racing gear. The right seat hugs the torso with no side play and without squeezing. A seat that is too wide lets the driver move in corners, and every unwanted movement is weight going to the wrong place at the wrong moment.

How to fit the seat

Fitting is not trivial. Height, distance from the axle and lateral offset are three variables that directly affect setup. The starting reference is the bottom of the seat level with the underside of the chassis tubes, but it is a starting point, not a fixed value.

The correct procedure is: position the brackets, adjust height and distance from the axle, set the lateral offset, tighten progressively, and check again after the first track session.

How seat position changes the setup

Moving the seat forwards or backwards, up or down, changes the driver's weight distribution and therefore how the kart responds in corners:

  • Forwards: more load on the front, more turn-in and rotation on corner entry, but less traction on exit.

  • Backwards: less load on the front (lazier turn-in), but more stability and maximum traction on corner exit.

  • Higher: the centre of gravity rises and lateral load transfer increases. It generates more mechanical grip, ideal for cold, slippery or wet tracks.

  • Lower: the centre of gravity drops and load transfer is reduced. The kart has less grip but rolls more freely, ideal to stop the engine bogging down on hot, heavily rubbered tracks.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the kart seat considered a setup variable?

Because the driver makes up 35-40% of the kart's total weight. Their position determines how weight is distributed across the axles and sides, and therefore grip, rotation and stability. TKS RaceLab treats seat position as the first variable to set before any other setup change.

How do you choose the right kart seat size?

Measure the width of the driver's hips while seated, in racing gear, and compare it with the manufacturer's size charts. The right seat hugs the torso with no side play and without squeezing. In the TKS RaceLab shop you will find seats in the most common sizes for competitive and club karting.

What is the correct height for mounting a kart seat?

The starting reference is the bottom of the seat level with the underside of the chassis tubes. On tracks with aggressive kerbs it can be kept slightly higher. TKS RaceLab uses this reference as the standard starting point for every seat installation.

What happens if the kart seat is mounted too high?

The centre of gravity rises, increasing lateral load transfer onto the outside wheels. This generates much more mechanical grip, making a high position ideal on slippery, cold or wet tracks.

Conversely, on high-grip or heavily rubbered tracks, a seat that is too high can overload the tyres and cause the kart to hop.

TKS RaceLab recommends always starting from the standard reference and changing the height in small steps.

Conclusion

The seat is one of the most underrated components in club karting and one of the most carefully managed in professional racing. It is not just about comfort: it is setup. Choosing it well, fitting it correctly and knowing how to move it to suit the track is a skill you build with practice and method.
