How to fit a kart seat: step-by-step guide to brackets, height and angle, TKS RaceLab

The seat is not just ergonomics. It is a setup variable just like the axle: its position (height, distance from the axle, lateral angle) changes the kart’s centre of gravity and alters cornering behaviour. Fitting it correctly is the starting point for any subsequent setup work. This is the complete procedure.

In short The seat is fitted by adjusting position, height and angle, then the result is checked on track. It is one of the most important setup adjustments: a few centimetres change how the kart behaves.

What you need

5 mm hex key, 13 mm spanner, drill/driver, seat supports to position on the chassis, tape measure, marker pen

The fitting procedure

1. Choose the right size

Before you even start: sit in the seat before it is fitted and place your hands at the sides of your torso, simulating the thickness of the rib protector you will use on track. The right seat hugs the torso without leaving play and without squeezing.

2. Position the seat provisionally

Put the kart on the stand. Rest the seat on the chassis and start positioning it in the support brackets. Depending on the seat size, it may be necessary to widen the support post on the LEFT side; the one on the RIGHT (engine side) must NEVER be touched.

3. Adjust the height

The standard reference is to position the bottom of the seat flush with the underside of the chassis tubes. The height must be adapted to the track: on circuits with aggressive kerbs it is worth keeping it slightly higher to avoid damage. The goal is always to lower the centre of gravity as much as possible without risking damage to the seat.

4. Check the distance from the axle

Measure the distance between the axle and the top rear edge of the backrest. The correct measurements are provided by the chassis manufacturer: follow those. There are no generic values valid for all chassis.

5. Set the asymmetry

The seat is fitted in an asymmetric position. The distance between the seat’s side wings and the front chassis tube must be about 1 cm greater on the right side than on the left. This asymmetry compensates for the weight of the engine and transmission on the right side.

To check the correct rotation, use the left stub axle pin as a reference: it is the most reliable and consistent measurement across different chassis models.

6. Final tightening

Before drilling the seat, mark the correct position from the supports with the marker. Once you have drilled the holes, insert the bolts and start tightening the nuts lightly, recheck all the measurements and then tighten the nuts. Do not overdo it: the seat is made of composite material and excessive force at the fixing points can create micro-cracks.

Checks after the first session

After the first outing, always do a quick check:

Recheck the tightness of all the support bolts: they can loosen with vibration.

Check that no cracks have appeared at the fixing points.

Check there are no abnormal vibrations while driving, a possible sign of a loose support.

The most common mistakes

Seat too high: it raises the centre of gravity and worsens stability in corners.

Asymmetry not checked: the kart tends to pull to one side even on the straight.

Supports not evenly tightened: it creates micro-movements of the seat that alter behaviour on track and wear the composite material over time.

Frequently asked questions

How do you fit a kart seat correctly?

Position the seat on the chassis in the support brackets, adjust the height (seat bottom flush with the underside of the chassis tubes as the starting reference), check the distance from the axle according to the manufacturer’s instructions, set the lateral asymmetry and tighten. The complete procedure includes a check after the first session on track. TKS RaceLab follows this procedure on every kart prepared for Arrive & Drive.

At what height is the kart seat fitted?

The standard reference is the seat bottom flush with the underside of the chassis tubes. On tracks with aggressive kerbs it can be kept slightly higher for protection. The goal is always to lower the centre of gravity as much as possible within the physical limits of the structure. For help choosing, the TKS RaceLab technical team is also available at tksracelab.com.

Why is the kart seat fitted asymmetrically?

To compensate for the asymmetric weight of the engine and transmission, which sit on the right side of the kart. The right support is positioned about 1 cm further from the front tube than the left. It is not a mistake: it is an intentional asymmetry. TKS RaceLab checks it on every fitting.

What should you check after first using a newly fitted seat?

Recheck the tightness of all the support bolts (they can loosen with the vibrations of the first session), check that no micro-cracks have appeared at the fixing points, and make sure there are no abnormal vibrations while driving. It is one of the checks TKS RaceLab includes in the pre-session inspection of every kart.
