Want to know where you lose time on track, corner by corner, without fitting complicated wires and sensors? That is what the Rotax TRAX does: a small device you fix to the kart and a smartphone app that shows you the data and tells you what to improve.

In short: the Rotax TRAX is Rotax's system for analysing your kart laps. The device records the kart's position and accelerations and, at the end of each run, sends the data to the app by itself, thanks to its built-in SIM. The app gives you lap times, racing line, Driver Score (a 0 to 100 rating of your driving) and tips from the Rotax Coach. It works on any kart with a 12-volt power supply, even without a Rotax engine. At TKS RaceLab it costs €168 including VAT.

What is the Rotax TRAX

Rotax TRAX device with GPS, acceleration sensor and built-in SIM, to mount on the kart

The Rotax TRAX has two parts: the device, a 130-gram box mounted on the kart, and the Rotax TRAX app for iPhone and Android. Inside the device there are a GPS, an acceleration sensor and a SIM: you do not need to keep your phone on the kart or connect it with a cable. Rotax launched it in January 2025.

It is not only for racers: it suits everyone from beginners to experienced drivers, and lets you compare yourself with friends and other drivers even if they drive at a different track.

What the Rotax TRAX measures

The GPS records the kart's position 10 times per second. The acceleration sensor measures braking, acceleration and cornering force 400 times per second. With this data the app rebuilds your lap times, the speed at every point and the line you took.

Driver Score and Rotax Coach: how they help you go faster

Smartphone with the Rotax TRAX app: racing line on track and Rotax Coach analysis

The Driver Score is a 0 to 100 rating that shows how much of the kart's potential you used. It does not depend on the class or the kart, so you can compare yourself with drivers from other classes too.

The Rotax Coach is a virtual coach: it looks at your laps and shows you the two parts of the track where you lose the most time, with the most likely reason. For example: you lift off and coast, you brake too early or you miss the apex.

According to Rotax, TRAX users improve by 0.6 seconds on average from the very first day. To learn how to read telemetry data, read Kart telemetry: how to read the data and find the lost tenths.

Challenges and leaderboards

With challenges you can compete with friends or other drivers without organising a race: you create a public or private challenge, choose what counts for the ranking and everyone drives whenever they want. Leaderboards can be sorted by distance driven, time on track, consistency, Driver Score or lap time, also track by track.

How to mount the Rotax TRAX on the kart

The device must sit on a flat, horizontal surface, with the arrow printed on top pointing in the direction of travel. Rotax suggests two ways:

  • On the Rotax EVO battery cover: with a 3D-printed bracket (the file is a free download from the Rotax website), glued with black silicone and fixed with an M6x20 screw and a nut. Do not overtighten the screw: the printed bracket can break.

  • On the kart floor tray: with the double-sided adhesive pad supplied in the box, after cleaning the spot well with alcohol wipes.

Then connect the cable to the battery: red wire to positive (+), black wire to negative (-). Fix the cables to the chassis with cable ties without pinching them, and put the connector somewhere easy to reach: Rotax recommends unplugging it after every run, so you do not drain the battery or record useless data.

No battery on your kart? A light 12-volt battery is all you need. Everything about Rotax engine batteries is in The Rotax Battery: Ignition, Starting and Care.

How to use it on track: 4 steps

Rotax TRAX app screen with a session started: track selected and device connected
  1. Switch on and wait for the signal: the device light flashes while it searches for GPS and stays steady when it is ready.

  2. Register the device, only the first time: in the app go to your profile, in the TRAX devices section, and scan the QR code printed on the device.

  3. Start the session in the app: choose track and layout and confirm. This is the most important step: if you switch on the device without starting the session, it records nothing.

  4. Drive: recording starts by itself above 10 km/h. When you stop for at least 10 seconds, the device sends the data and you find the run in the app. At the end of the day, close the session.

If your track is not there yet, you can create it yourself in the app. It takes some time before it is checked and made available to everyone: in the meantime you see reduced data.

Rotax TRAX or telemetry with a display?

A telemetry system with a display, like the Alfano 7, shows your times while you drive, right on the steering wheel. The Rotax TRAX has no display: it works after each run, in the app, and its strength is the automatic analysis with Driver Score and Rotax Coach, plus challenges with other drivers. They are two different tools and can also be used together. On the Alfano, read Alfano 7 Telemetry: What Really Changes on Track.

Price and where to buy it

At TKS RaceLab, Official Rotax Dealer, the Rotax TRAX costs €168 including VAT: you can find it here, Rotax TRAX. The app is a free download from the App Store and Google Play; the Pro version is a subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Rotax TRAX work on a kart without a Rotax engine?

Yes. It works on any kart with a 12-volt power supply, whatever the engine. If the kart has no battery, a light 12-volt battery is enough.

Do I need to keep my phone on the kart?

No. The device has a built-in SIM and sends the data to the app by itself at the end of every run.

Why didn't the Rotax TRAX record my laps?

Almost always because the session was not started in the app: the device on its own does not record, even when it is switched on. Before going on track, open the app, choose track and device and confirm.

What does the free app do and what does the Pro version add?

With the free app you record lap times and distance and see other drivers' statistics. With Pro you get speed, time difference and G-force graphs, the Rotax Coach, lap comparison, challenges and privacy mode.

What is the Driver Score?

It is a 0 to 100 rating that shows how much of the kart's potential you used. It does not depend on the class or the kart, so you can compare yourself with anyone.

How much does the Rotax TRAX cost?

The device costs €168 including VAT at TKS RaceLab. The app is free to download; the Pro version is a monthly or yearly subscription, with a free trial period.
