Rotax Grand Finals 2026: how to qualify and when they are held

In short The Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals are the world final of the Rotax one-make series. In 2026 they are held in Portimão, Portugal, at the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve, from 7 to 14 November. You do not enter: you qualify. The overall winner of each class of a national RMC championship, in Italy the Rotax MAX Challenge Italia, can earn the place with Rotax's written authorisation, and more places come from international and national RMC events. For drivers qualified in the combustion engine classes, kart, engine, tyres, fuel and entry are covered by Rotax and the distributors.
What the Rotax Grand Finals are
The Rotax Grand Finals are the event that closes every Rotax MAX Challenge season. Drivers from all over the world, qualified in their own championships, race on the same track with equal equipment for everyone: karts, engines and tyres are allocated by the organisers.
For a Rotax driver it is the highest goal: getting there means you have won, or nearly won, your own championship.
Rotax Grand Finals 2026: where and when
The 2026 edition takes place at the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, Portugal, from 7 to 14 November 2026. The dates were moved in March 2026 because of a change in the international motorsport calendar. It is the fifth time in 26 years that the Grand Finals return to Portimão.
The Grand Finals are an international invitation event, run by Rotax under the international sporting code.
The categories racing at the Grand Finals
The 2026 sporting regulations provide these combustion engine categories: 125 Micro MAX, 125 Mini MAX, 125 Junior MAX, 125 Senior MAX, Senior MAX Masters, 125 MAX DD2 and DD2 Masters. Then there are the electric classes E10 and E20, with their own qualification rules.

125 Micro MAX: 8-11 years, minimum weight 105 kg.
125 Mini MAX: 10-13 years, 115 kg.
125 Junior MAX: 12-14 years, 145 kg.
125 Senior MAX: from 15 years, or from 14 with an international F licence, 162 kg.
125 Senior MAX Masters: from 32 years, 175 kg.
125 MAX DD2: from 15 years, 175 kg.
125 MAX DD2 Masters: from 32 years, 180 kg.
Ages are counted on the age reached in the year of the race. The weight is that of the kart with the driver and all the safety gear.
How to qualify for the Rotax Grand Finals

The road, under the RMC Global 2026 sporting regulations, is this:
Race a national RMC championship. In Italy it is the Rotax MAX Challenge Italia. The licence must be from the same federation from the first to the last race of the championship: you cannot change licence once the season has started to take the place in another country.
Win the standings of your class. The overall winner of each national class can qualify, with Rotax's written authorisation. The number of places for each country is decided by Rotax and can change every year.
The other places. Other drivers can qualify from international or national RMC events, according to the sporting regulations of each series. The distributor can put the runner up on a waiting list, and Rotax can award wild cards.
For the Masters there is one more rule: the winner of the Masters class qualifies, or the best driver of Masters age in the MAX or DD2 standings of the national championship.
Only one ticket per year
Each driver can win only one ticket to the Grand Finals per season: the first one won counts. If a driver races in a higher category, they qualify in that one, and the place in the lower category goes to the next driver.
Tickets cannot be sold: they are a prize for Rotax drivers.
How much it costs to go to the Grand Finals
For drivers qualified in the combustion engine classes, the 2026 regulations state that kart, engines, tyres, fuel and entry are covered by Rotax and the distributors. The regulations do not mention travel and accommodation: what the package covers is confirmed by the national distributor. For the electric classes E10 and E20 the conditions are different.
Preparing for an RMC championship
To get to the Grand Finals you first have to win your national championship, and to win you need an engine that is always legal and reliable. Three things to do before the season:
Engine rebuilt and sealed by a Rotax service centre, with the identity card in order.
Spare parts for the parts that wear: spark plugs, reeds, gaskets, silencer wadding.
Plenty of track time with the right kart and telemetry to read the data.
In the shop you will find the full catalogue of original Rotax spare parts. And if you want to find out how a racing kart with a Rotax engine drives before you buy one, with Arrive & Drive Pro you try it on track, ready to go.
