TKS RaceLab cover: bent kart chassis, how to spot it and what to check

After contact or an off, the kart may not feel the same: it pulls to one side, turns better to the right than to the left, wears the tyres differently. The chassis is not always to blame. First rule out the parts that bend more easily, then check the chassis with the right tools. Here is how, step by step.

In short A bent kart chassis shows clear signs: the kart pulls to one side with the steering wheel straight, behaves differently in right and left corners, and wears the tyres differently on the two sides. Before blaming the chassis, check stub axles, axle, bearings and steering column, which bend first in a crash. Then check the measurements of both sides and the chassis C brackets with the dedicated tool. If the chassis is bent, a technician decides whether to straighten or replace it.

Bent kart chassis: the signs on track

• Pulls to one side: with the steering wheel straight the kart drifts to one side. There are several possible causes, you will find them in kart pulling to one side: causes and checks.

• Different corners: in one direction the kart turns in well, in the other it understeers or oversteers for no setup reason.

• Different tyres: the tyres on one side wear or heat up differently from the other side.

• Steering wheel off centre: on the straight the steering wheel is no longer straight as before.

• After a crash: if these signs appear after contact, the suspicion is well founded and a full check is needed.

Before the chassis: check the parts that bend first

In a crash the most exposed parts bend first. Replacing them costs much less than a chassis, so check them first.

• Stub axle: the pin must not be bent and the wheel must turn true, without wobbling. One example is the Maranello KZ V11 10-25 RX2 stub axle.

• Axle: once removed, roll it on a flat surface: if it wobbles it is bent and must be replaced, like the Maranello 50 T4 axle.

• Axle bearings: they must turn freely and without play, and the housings must not be deformed: Maranello 50-80 axle bearing with grub screws.

• Steering column: with the steering wheel straight the wheels must be straight. A bent column shifts the whole steering: Maranello R2.0 steering column.

After replacing the parts, redo the full setup with the kart geometry guide.

How to check the kart chassis

If the parts are fine but the kart still pulls, it is time to check the kart chassis.

• On a flat surface: set the kart without the driver on a flat surface, with the tyres at the same pressure, and see whether it sits evenly.

• Measure both sides: compare right and left, for example the front and rear track width, with the track width gauge with laser rangefinder.

• Check the C brackets: the C brackets are the chassis supports where the stub axle pins work. They are checked with dedicated squares: for Maranello and CKR chassis there is the tool to check the Maranello chassis C brackets, for a 22 mm pin and 11° inclination.

Can a bent chassis be straightened?

Often yes, if the tube is only bent. The job must be done by a technician with the right equipment: the C brackets are locked and the chassis is brought back into line with a lever, using for example the support kit to lock the C brackets and straighten the chassis.

If instead a tube is cracked or crushed, or a weld is damaged, the chassis must be replaced: racing in these conditions is not safe. For the OK class, for example, there is the Maranello OK MK3 2026 chassis.

How to avoid bending the chassis

• After every crash: check stub axles, axle and steering column straight away, before going back on track.

• In transport: kart well secured, properly supported and with no weight on top. Read how to load and secure the kart for transport.

• On kerbs: high kerbs taken hard put the chassis and stub axles under stress.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my kart chassis is bent?

The typical signs are the kart pulling to one side with the steering wheel straight, different behaviour in right and left corners, and tyres wearing differently on the two sides. Before blaming the chassis, check stub axles, axle, bearings and steering column.

What should I check after a kart crash?

Stub axles, axle, axle bearings and steering column, which bend first. Then the measurements of both sides and the chassis C brackets. If the parts are fine but the kart still pulls, the chassis must be checked.
