Kart Pulling to One Side: Causes, Checks and the Right Order to Fix It

Stub axle, wheel hub and brake caliper of a racing kart: the components to check when the kart pulls to one side

A kart that pulls to the right or left is not just annoying: it forces you to drive while compensating, tires your arms and makes it impossible to understand whether the problem is you or the kart.

The wrong thing to do is start straight away with caster, camber and toe. First you need to rule out the simple causes. On a kart, the most obvious fault often does not come from the most sophisticated adjustment.

In short If the kart pulls to one side, the right order of checks is: tyres and pressures, brakes, wheels and hubs, axle, steering and chassis, and only at the end the geometry. Changing everything at once only confuses things: one check at a time.

Kart pulling to one side: where to start the checks

If the kart pulls on the straight, check in this order: tyres and pressures, brakes, wheels and hubs, axle, steering, chassis and only at the end the geometry. Changing everything at once does not solve anything: it confuses.

First check: tyres and pressures

It is the quickest and most underrated check. A different pressure between left and right changes how the kart behaves from the very first metres.

Always check cold with the same gauge. Also look at the condition of the tyre: unevenly worn tread, a damaged carcass or a tyre much older than the other can make a geometry look wrong when it is not.

Do not use pressure to “hide” a mechanical problem. If the kart pulls hard, find the cause first.

Second check: brakes that stay slightly on

A caliper that does not retract properly, an unevenly worn pad or a disc that rubs can brake one wheel more than the other.

After a few laps, without touching hot parts, check whether one area of the brake is much hotter than the other. If the kart slows down on its own or tends to veer especially when you lift off the throttle, this check becomes the priority.

Paddock mistake: immediately blaming the driver for “braking crooked”. First make sure the kart rolls freely.

Third check: wheels, hubs and axle

A wheel not tightened properly, a damaged hub or a bearing that runs badly can change the direction of the kart. The same goes for a bent axle, even slightly.

With the kart lifted, spin the wheels and see whether they turn freely. Check for abnormal play, noises and signs of rubbing. If you have hit a kerb hard, had contact or gone off track, do not skip this step.

The useful question is not “does the kart pull?”. It is: “did it start pulling after a specific event?”. If the answer is yes, look first for the component that may have taken the hit.

Fourth check: steering and steering column

Check track rods, rod ends, stub axles and steering column. The steering wheel must move freely and return without sticking. A slightly bent track rod or a joint with play is not always visible to the eye, but you feel it when driving.

Put the steering wheel straight and compare the position of the wheels. If one already looks more toed-in or toed-out than the other, do not correct it “from memory”: measure.

Fifth check: geometry, but only afterwards

When tyres, brakes and mechanical components are fine, move on to toe, camber and caster.

Toe affects the precision and stability of the kart. Camber changes how the tyre sits on the track in corners. Caster affects the kart's ability to turn in and lift the inside rear wheel. They are important adjustments, but they are not the first answer to every fault.

How a race mechanic thinks: first bring the kart back to a known mechanical condition. Then measure. Finally change one thing at a time and test on track. That way every reaction of the kart has a meaning.

When the problem is the chassis

If the kart always pulls at the same point, even after the checks and a correctly measured geometry, there may be a chassis problem. It does not automatically mean it should be thrown away: it means it needs to be checked by someone with the tools and experience to do so.

A chassis can be affected by repeated impacts, kerbs taken hard or contact. Carrying on changing the set-up to compensate only wastes time and tyres.

To remember before going on track

  • check that pressures are equal when cold;

  • make sure the wheels turn freely;

  • check that the brake does not stay on;

  • check tightening torques, track rods and play;

  • measure the geometry: do not go by eye;

  • after every change, test the kart and note what changes.

Frequently asked questions

My kart pulls to the right only under acceleration: what should I check?

First check tyres, axle, chain and rear-end alignment. If it also happens at constant throttle, go back to the checks on wheels, brakes and steering.

Can I fix the problem with toe?

Only if you have already ruled out mechanical causes. Using it to compensate for a dragging brake or a damaged wheel makes the problem worse.

After hitting a kerb the steering wheel is no longer straight: can I carry on?

Stop and check. It may just be a bent or loose track rod, but it is better to check stub axles, rims and hubs straight away.

Conclusion

A kart that pulls to one side should not be “driven over”. It should be listened to and checked in a precise order. When in doubt, start with simple, measurable things: it is the fastest way to get back to driving well and really understand what the kart is telling you.
