TKS RaceLab cover: kart transport, how to load and secure it without damage

Before driving on track you have to get there. It sounds obvious, but a badly loaded kart can arrive at the circuit with a bent radiator, marked bodywork or, worse, a bent chassis. And leaving a spanner or the wet tyres at home can ruin the day. Here is how to organise kart transport safely and without stress.

In short Choose between a van, which protects and works as a garage, and a trailer, which costs less. Load the kart on its trolley and secure it with ratchet straps to the chassis, never to bodywork, steering wheel or brake lines. Empty the tank and carry fuel in tightly closed approved cans. Protect radiator and intake. Use a fixed checklist so you forget nothing.

Van or trailer: how to choose

• Van: the kart travels sheltered from rain, dust and prying eyes. At the track it becomes a small garage to work and change in. It's the choice for those who go to the track often and carry a lot of equipment.

• Car trailer: it costs less and leaves the car free for everyday use. But the kart travels more exposed: you need a cover and even more careful fixing.

In both cases check the total weight and the driving rules for your vehicle when loaded.

How to load and secure the kart for kart transport

• Use a kart trolley: loading and unloading by hand is tiring and risky for your back and the chassis. A trolley moves the kart safely from the garage to the vehicle and around the paddock.

• Straps on the chassis: secure the kart with ratchet straps hooked to the chassis tubes. Never on bodywork, steering wheel, steering column, brake lines or radiator.

• Still in every direction: the kart mustn't move forwards or sideways, but the straps mustn't bend anything. Tighten just enough.

• Protected wheels: if the kart travels on its wheels, rest them on a non-slip mat and block them.

Protecting the delicate parts

• Radiator: it's the most exposed part: make sure it doesn't touch walls or other objects during the journey.

• Intake and exhaust: cover the air intake and the exhaust outlet so dirt or insects can't get in.

• Bodywork: no tools or cans resting on it. If you find marks after a journey, check them as after contact: we explain how in the guide to bodywork checks.

• Tyres: spare tyres should be kept away from sun and heat sources.

Fuel and mix: transporting safely

Empty the kart's tank or leave only the bare minimum with the cap tightly closed. Fuel and mix should be carried in approved cans, tightly closed and secured so they can't tip over. Keep the vehicle ventilated and never smoke near the cans.

In the paddock: trolley and lift

Once you arrive, the kart has to be moved several times: from the vehicle to the garage, from the garage to the pre-grid, to the scales. The REVOLUTION electric trolley makes these moves easy even when the paddock is large. To work on the kart at the right height, without bending over for hours, there's the REVOLUTION Lift kart lifting system. You'll find all the details in the guide to the Revolution trolley.

The kart transport checklist

Keep a fixed list and tick it off before leaving:

• Kart and engine: kart, trolley or stand, dry and wet tyres on rims, main spare parts.

• Tools: spanners, pressure gauge, pump, tyre changer if you use one, tape, cable ties.

• Fluids: fuel, two-stroke oil for the mix, water for the radiator, chain products.

• Driver: helmet, suit, gloves, boots, rib protector, licence and documents.

For the complete list of equipment read the guide what you need to go karting, and as soon as you arrive do the pre-race checks.

The most common kart transport mistakes

• Straps on the bodywork or steering wheel: they bend and break.

• Unsecured cans: a can that tips over is dangerous and makes a mess.

• Loading everything at the last minute: that's how important things get forgotten.

At the end of the season, before putting the kart away, follow the winter storage checklist.

Frequently asked questions

How do you secure a kart in a van?

Rest the kart on its trolley or stand and secure it with ratchet straps hooked to the chassis, never to the bodywork, steering wheel or brake lines. The straps must hold the kart still in every direction without bending anything.

Can you transport a kart with fuel in the tank?

Better not: empty the tank or leave the bare minimum with the cap tightly closed. Fuel and mix should be carried in approved cans, tightly closed and secured, with the vehicle ventilated.

Is a van or a trailer better for transporting a kart?

A van protects the kart from rain, dust and theft and also becomes a small garage at the track. A trailer costs less and leaves the car free, but the kart must be well covered. It depends on how often you go to the track and how much equipment you carry.
