TKS RaceLab cover: kart bodywork after contact, front fairing and side pods to check

In karting contact happens: a wheel-to-wheel under braking, a kerb taken badly, a nudge at the start. The bodywork absorbs the hit and protects driver and mechanics, but after contact it must be checked carefully. Here is what to look at on kart bodywork, what the regulations say and when to replace parts.

In short After contact, check the front fairing, mounting kit, side pods and rear bumper, together with their supports. The front fairing must be able to slide back freely: that's why the regulations require a dedicated mounting system. The technical regulations forbid adding material to homologated components: for racing, a broken part is replaced.

What kart bodywork is for

The bodywork is made up of front fairing, nose panel, side pods and rear bumper. It protects the driver, stops wheels touching and locking together and absorbs part of the impacts. It isn't just cosmetic: it's a safety element and, in races, it must comply with the regulations.

After contact: the checks to do

• Front fairing: look for cracks and deformation and check that it's in place and slides properly on its supports.

• Mounting kit: clips, springs and brackets must be intact and close properly.

• Side pods: check for cracks, screws, supports and side bars, often bent after contact.

• Rear bumper: check mountings and supports, especially after being hit from behind.

• What's behind: a hit that breaks a side pod can also bend steering, axle or chassis. If the kart doesn't go straight, check the geometry with the kart basic setup guide.

Kart front fairing: what the regulations say

The ACI Sport karting technical regulations (art. 4.14.3, 2023 edition) state that:

• Mandatory mounting system: the front fairing must be fitted with an approved mounting system.

• Free to move: the front fairing must be able to move freely backwards towards the chassis.

• Ground clearance: between 25 and 60 mm, with the driver on board.

• Snap clips: they must be able to be opened and closed by hand.

Regulations change over time: before a race always check the current year's edition and ask the scrutineers if in doubt. For track rules there is the guide to karting flags.

Repair or replace?

Scratches and surface marks are part of a kart's life. But the ACI Sport technical regulations (art. 3) forbid adding material to homologated components. In practice: cracked, broken or deformed bodywork, if you want to race, is replaced. Fillers, plastic welding or reinforcements are not the right way.

Maranello bodywork spare parts

As an official authorised Maranello Kart dealer we only supply genuine parts: the 507/509 bodywork kit complete with brackets, the black 509 CIK/FIA front fairing, the 507 side pod and the NA3 CIK-FIA front fairing mounting kit. For general maintenance there is the guide to kart maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Can kart bodywork be repaired?

Scratches and surface marks are not a problem. But the ACI Sport technical regulations forbid adding material to homologated components: broken or deformed bodywork must be replaced for racing.

Why must the kart front fairing be able to move?

Because the regulations require the front fairing to be able to move freely backwards towards the chassis. That's why a dedicated mounting system is used: if after contact the fairing no longer slides properly, it must be checked.

What should you check besides the bodywork after contact?

The bodywork supports and mountings, but also steering, axle and chassis: contact that breaks a side pod may have bent something. If the kart pulls to one side, stop and check.
