Rotax intake silencer: how to clean and oil the air filter

Updated: 3 days ago

Everyone looks at the carburettor, the spark plug, the exhaust valve. But before all of that there is the intake silencer. All the air the engine breathes passes through here, and if the filter is dirty or damaged the Rotax cannot perform at its best. Let's see what it does, how to clean it and which mistakes to avoid.
In short The Rotax intake silencer contains the air filter: it cleans the air entering the engine and reduces intake noise. The filter should be cleaned when it is dirty and during engine maintenance, with biodegradable products, then oiled and replaced if it is damaged. After every session in the rain the filter cleaning kit should be used.
What the Rotax intake silencer does
On the Rotax MAX EVO the intake silencer integrates the air filter. It has two jobs: cleaning the air entering the carburettor and reducing intake noise. The filter is made of several layers and is optimised in the airflow area.

A dirty filter lets less air through, a damaged filter lets dust and dirt in: either way the engine suffers. That is why its maintenance is part of the engine routine, together with what is described in the guide to Rotax engine maintenance.
When to clean the Rotax air filter
• When it is dirty: if the filter looks dirty, it must be cleaned.
• During engine maintenance: every job on the engine is the right moment to check it.
• After every session in the rain: use the air filter cleaning kit.
• If it is damaged: a filter with visible damage is replaced, not repaired.
How to clean the Rotax intake silencer step by step
• 1. Remove it and close the intake: take off the silencer and immediately close the carburettor inlet with a Rotax intake cap, so no dirt gets in while you work.

• 2. Take out the filter: separate the filter from the silencer body and check it has no tears or deformed parts.
• 3. Wash with biodegradable products: use biodegradable products. No petrol or aggressive solvents.

• 4. Let it dry thoroughly: the filter must be dry before you oil it and refit it.
• 5. Apply the oil: the Rotax maintenance schedule says to oil the filter after cleaning. Spread the oil evenly, without overdoing it.
• 6. Clean the silencer body too: dust and residue also stay in the two halves of the silencer and in the tube.
• 7. Refit and check the seal: make sure the filter is seated, the silencer is properly closed and the clamp is tightened correctly.
The most common mistakes
• Running with a dirty filter: less air to the engine and worse response.
• Using petrol or solvents: they can damage the layers of the filter. Always use biodegradable products.
• Refitting the filter wet: it must be left to dry before oiling.
• Forgetting to clean it after rain: water and dirt from the track end up in the filter.
• Refitting without checking the seal: a silencer that is not properly closed lets unfiltered air through.
Genuine spare parts for the Rotax intake silencer
If the filter is damaged or a part is broken, it is replaced with genuine Rotax spare parts. For the Rotax MAX EVO you will find the Rotax MAX EVO air filter, the lower silencer body and upper silencer body, the silencer tube and the 50-70 filter clamp. For the DD2 there is the Rotax DD2 air filter.
