Kart Engine Bogging on Corner Exit: Gearing or Carburation?

You open the throttle on corner exit and the engine does not pick up: it stays «flat» and struggles to rev. It is one of the most common problems, and there are two main causes: gearing that is too long or carburation that needs sorting. Let us see how to tell which of the two it is, without guesswork.
In short If the engine runs clean but stays labouring on exit, the gearing is too long and needs shortening. If it hesitates, smokes or surges, the low and mid-range carburation needs sorting. First, though, check the spark plug, exhaust valve and clutch, and change one thing at a time.
The two suspects: gearing or carburation
When there is no pick-up on exit, one of these two factors is almost always to blame. The good news is that they feel different: with a little attention you can tell them apart.
Clue 1: it is the gearing
If the engine delivers its power evenly and pulls cleanly (no hesitation, no flat spots, no excess smoke from the exhaust), but on exit it stays «labouring» and struggles to pick up revs, especially in slow corners, the gearing is probably too long. In practice you are asking the engine to pull a gear that is too «tall» for that corner.
The fix: shorten the gearing, i.e. fit a sprocket with more teeth (or a smaller pinion). You will have more torque and pick-up on exit, at the cost of a little top speed. It is a compromise that almost always pays: you lose very little top speed at the end of the straight, while having torque on exit gains you time throughout the acceleration. We explain how to calculate it in the guide to the pinion/sprocket ratio.
Clue 2: it is the carburation
If, on the other hand, the engine hesitates, has flat spots, smokes from the exhaust or surges irregularly when you open the throttle, the problem is the carburation.
On the Rotax MAX the carburettor is the Dell'Orto VHSB 34 XS, a float-bowl carburettor. In Rotax races the idle jet (marked 60), needle (marked K57) and atomiser (DP 267) are fixed; the main jet, the needle clip position, the idle screw (throttle stop) and the air screw remain free. The carburettor works in phases, depending on how far you open the throttle:
• From idle to about 1/4: the idle circuit is in charge (idle jet, fixed by regulation, and air screw). It is not only for idling: it also governs the first opening of the throttle, i.e. the response in the very first instant you open it.
• From 1/4 to 3/4 (progression): the tapered needle and its clip position do the work.
• From 3/4 to full throttle: the main jet is in charge, with the needle still having an effect.
For pick-up on corner exit the whole sequence matters: the very first burst of throttle depends on the idle jet and air screw; immediately afterwards the needle and its clip position come in; at wide throttle the main jet is in charge, and in karting it is the main reference of the day (chosen according to temperature and humidity). If pick-up is hesitant right at the first opening (typical in slow corners), look at the air screw and idle screw, because in Rotax races the idle jet is fixed; if the flat spot is at half throttle, look at the needle and clip.
How to read the symptom:
• Too rich: when you open the throttle the engine hesitates, struggles to rev and smokes from the exhaust.
• Too lean: the response comes late and then kicks in suddenly (switch effect), sometimes with a metallic noise: a risky condition for the engine.
Precise tuning (main jet, needle clip and air screw according to temperature, humidity and altitude) is fine work: you will find it in the dedicated guide to the Dell'Orto VHSB 34, and if you are not experienced, have a technician take care of it.

The Rotax MAX case: keep it in its torque band
On the Rotax MAX it matters to know where it really delivers, and the numbers are clear. The 125 Senior MAX EVO has maximum torque at about 9,000 rpm and maximum power (30 hp) at 11,500 rpm. The 125 DD2 MAX EVO, more highly tuned, has maximum torque at about 10,500 rpm and maximum power (34 hp) at 12,000 rpm. In both cases, below that band the engine, like every two-stroke, pulls weakly: it must be kept on the boil, and the gearing must be chosen so that on corner exit it stays in the useful zone and not «below its torque band». The Senior MAX EVO and DD2 EVO also have an electronically controlled exhaust valve that comes into play at high revs to improve power delivery: keep it clean, because if it is clogged, power delivery suffers.
First of all: the basic checks
Before changing the gearing or touching the carburation, check the simple things: the spark plug (reading it tells you a lot about the carburation), the cleanliness of the exhaust valve and, on engines with a clutch, that the clutch is not slipping. The «lack of pick-up» often starts right here.
An honest recommendation
Carburation is delicate: on a new engine a setting that is too lean can lead to a seizure. If you are not experienced, have a mechanic look after it. Better a slower lap than a broken engine.
In brief
Engine clean but labouring on exit → gearing too long, shorten it. Engine that hesitates, smokes or surges → low and mid-range carburation to sort. And first of all check spark plug, exhaust valve and clutch. One change at a time, always.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my kart pick up revs on corner exit?
There are two main causes: gearing that is too long, which keeps the engine below its torque band, or carburation that needs sorting.
How can I tell whether it is the gearing or the carburation?
If the engine runs clean but stays «labouring» on exit, it is the gearing, which needs shortening; if it hesitates, smokes from the exhaust or surges, it is the carburation.
What is adjusted on the Rotax MAX carburettor?
It is the Dell'Orto VHSB 34 XS. In Rotax races the main jet, the needle clip position, the idle screw and the air screw are free; the idle jet (60), needle (K57) and atomiser are fixed.
