How to Start Karting: A Complete Beginner’s Guide

Getting into karting is the first step towards one of the most formative and exciting motorsports. The kart is the foundation of every path in motorsport, but it is also an accessible activity for those who want to approach the track as amateurs. In this guide you will find clear, practical information to understand how to start karting, what you really need and how to take your first steps with awareness.

In short To get started you do not need your own kart: you start with leisure karting or with an Arrive & Drive day in a racing kart. You need a helmet, race suit, gloves, boots and rib protector; an ACI Sport licence only if you want to race.
What karting is and why it is the ideal starting point
Karting is a discipline that combines driving technique, mechanical sensitivity and the ability to adapt to the track. Unlike other motorsports, it lets you learn the fundamentals quickly: racing lines, speed management, control of the kart and respect for safety rules. That is why it is considered the ideal starting point both for those who dream of racing and for those who simply want to enjoy the track with passion.
One of the first doubts concerns the initial choice: leisure kart or your own kart. Leisure karting is ideal for your first experiences and lets you get comfortable with driving without major investment. Owning a kart, on the other hand, requires more commitment but lets you grow technically and get to know the machine in depth.
What you really need to start karting
To approach karting correctly, it is important to know the essential gear. Not everything is needed straight away, but some items are fundamental.
The basic gear includes a homologated helmet, karting suit, gloves, specific boots and a rib protector: essential items for safety and comfort.
From a technical point of view, every kart is made up of three main elements: the chassis, which affects cornering behaviour; the engine, which determines performance and the class it is used in; the tyres, fundamental for grip and control. Understanding the role of each component helps you make more informed choices right from the start.
Your first times on track: what to expect
The first day on track is often a mix of excitement and nerves. It is normal to feel a bit lost at first. The goal should not be speed, but understanding the kart and the basic rules: pit entry and exit, respecting the flags, racing lines and safety.
Getting comfortable with the kart takes time, but every session brings clear improvements.

Common mistakes of karting beginners
Many beginners make similar mistakes:
looking for maximum performance straight away
underestimating the importance of safety
buying components that do not suit their level
Avoiding these mistakes lets you progress faster and enjoy karting in a more fun and sustainable way.
How to find your way when choosing products
One of the most complex aspects for beginners is understanding what to buy. It is important to rely on a shop specialised in karting, where products are selected with care and not simply offered in quantity.
A gradual approach, based on quality and reliability, is always the best choice for those taking their first steps.
Starting karting means entering a world of technique, passion and continuous growth. With the right information, suitable gear and an informed approach, the track becomes a place of learning and fun.
TKS RaceLab was created precisely to accompany enthusiasts on this path, offering selected products, informative content and a clear vision of karting for those who want to start the right way.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get started in competitive karting? The typical path starts with one or more trial sessions in a racing kart, to understand whether the format is right for you. Then you choose the class (Rotax Senior is the most suitable for adults), buy the gear and enter a regional championship. TKS RaceLab offers a natural entry point with the Arrive & Drive service.
How old do you need to be to start competitive karting? In Italy the Rotax Senior requires an F licence, from age 14 (reached in the year), and the DD2 an E licence, from age 15. For younger drivers there are the Mini (from age 9) and Junior (from age 12) classes. There is no upper age limit: karting is also practised competitively by adults.
What is the minimum cost to start competitive karting? You need: personal gear (from €300 to €600), access to a kart (leisure or purchase) and entry to a track or championship. With TKS RaceLab’s Arrive & Drive you find the kart ready in the pits at Lonato, Franciacorta, Cremona and Ala; you bring your own personal gear.
Do you need a licence to race in karting? For official FIA/ACI Sport races, yes, a sporting licence is required. For free practice sessions it is generally not needed. You will find grades, ages and the process in our guide Karting licence.
