Karting for Kids: What Age to Start and How (A Guide for Parents)

Karting is one of the best ways to share a passion between parent and child: we know this well, because TKS RaceLab was born partly from this, a father-and-son team that truly lives karting. But when a child wants to start, parents always ask the same questions: at what age? Is it safe? How much does it cost?
Here is an honest guide to karting for kids, with official ACI Sport 2026 data (Italy), to help you support your child the right way.
In short In Italy children start with Baby Kart from 6 to 8 years old and with the Mini class from 9 (in the year they turn 9). They need an ACI Sport licence (Baby or Mini) and a medical certificate; for a first licence between 9 and 17 there is the Federal Karting Course. Our advice: let them try without pressure, before buying a kart and gear.
Karting for kids: at what age can they start?
Earlier than you think. In Italy the pre-competitive Baby Kart activity is designed for children aged 6 to 8: they get to know karting with suitable machines, safely, supported by parents and ACI instructors. Just to try it, even younger children can drive rental karts suited to them, where available.
Actual competition starts from 9 years old (in the year they turn 9) with the Mini class.
Classes for the youngest drivers (ACI 2026)
Baby Kart (6-8 years). Pre-competitive activity: children learn to drive and to know the rules and correct behaviour in a protected environment. A national Baby licence is required.
MINI Gr.3 and MINI Gr.3 Under 10 (from 9 years, in the year they turn 9). The first competitive class: direct-drive Mini karts with limited power and smooth delivery. The Under 10 class is for children born from 1 January 2016. A national Mini licence is required.
MINI Gr.3 is raced until the driver turns 13; then they move on to the next classes (Junior).
The licence and the federal course
To take part you need the appropriate ACI Sport licence (Baby or Mini) and a medical certificate. An important and positive point: anyone taking their first licence between 9 and 17 must attend a mandatory Federal Karting Course, designed precisely to teach young drivers the basics and safety. Everything starts from correct driving, and that is how it should be.
If you live outside Italy, rules and ages are set by your national federation: check with them before you start.
Safety comes first
Karts for children are designed to be safe: reduced power, speeds suited to the age, controlled tracks. But real safety lies in the gear and the approach: a homologated helmet of the right size, race suit, gloves, boots and above all a neck brace and rib protector (essential for the youngest). And a kart set up for the child's size: seat, pedals and steering wheel adapted to their build.
How much does it cost to get a child started
To try it, the cheapest way is a rental kart or an organised session: low cost and no commitment. For real racing, on top of the Mini kart you add gear, licence and running costs.
Our honest advice: do not buy anything on impulse. First let your child try, make sure the passion is theirs and not just yours, then invest calmly.
The real value: time together
Beyond lap times, for a child karting is a school of life: concentration, respect for the rules, managing emotions, the ability to get back up after a mistake. And for a parent it is quality time, real and shared in the pits. It is the part you cannot measure with a stopwatch, and often the most important one.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can a child start karting?
In Italy the pre-competitive Baby Kart activity is for ages 6 to 8; competition (Mini class) starts from the year the child turns 9. Just to try it, on suitable rental karts, even earlier.
Is karting dangerous for children?
It is a sport designed with power and delivery suited to the age, on controlled tracks. With homologated gear (helmet, neck brace and rib protector for everyone) and a kart set up for the child's size, the risks are managed.
Does a child need a licence?
Yes, for ACI Sport activity in Italy: Baby licence (6-8 years) or Mini licence (from the year they turn 9). A medical certificate is required and, for a first licence between 9 and 17, the mandatory Federal Karting Course.
How much does it cost to get a child started?
To try it, very little (rental or a session). For real racing you add a Mini kart, gear, licence and running costs. Better to try before buying anything.
How do I know if it is their passion and not mine?
Let them try without pressure and without big upfront investments. If they come home with shining eyes and immediately ask to do it again, you have your answer.
Conclusion
Karting can be much more than a sport: for many it is an adventure for two, parent and child. Start calmly, put safety first, let them try before you buy, and enjoy the journey. Lap times will come; the memories together stay.
