How to learn a new kart track: the 5-step method

You arrive at a track you have never seen and after ten laps it still feels like driving in the dark? It happens to everyone, even experienced drivers. The difference is the method: here is how to learn a new kart track in just a few sessions, with notes on four circuits in Northern Italy: Lonato, Franciacorta, Cremona and Ala.
In short To learn a new kart track you don't need lots of laps: you need laps with a method. First study the layout, then fix your reference points, build a basic line and only then look for the limit. With telemetry you find out in a few sessions where you are losing time.
Why the first laps on a new track matter so much
On your first laps at a circuit you don't know, your brain works almost entirely on finding its way: where the corner turns, where the track ends, how much room there is on the exit. If you push flat out at this stage, you memorise wrong braking points and messy lines, which then take effort and time to correct.
Drivers who learn a new track well do the opposite: they start calmly, build a clean base and raise the pace one step at a time.
The 5-step method to learn a new kart track
• 1. Study the layout before you get in the kart: look at the track map and, if you can, an onboard video. Count the corners, find the longest straight and the main braking zones. If the track allows it, walk a lap: you will see the kerbs, the gradients and where the asphalt changes.
• 2. Fix your reference points: for each corner choose three fixed references: where to start braking, where the apex is and where to exit. Use signs, kerbs, patches of asphalt or posts: anything that does not move. Without references every lap is different and you don't improve.
• 3. Build a basic line: in the first sessions drive at 70-80%: the goal is a clean, repeatable line, not the lap time. Go wide on entry, look for the apex and unwind the steering on exit using the whole track. To revise the theory read the guide on racing lines and the apex.

• 4. Move your braking points one step at a time: once the line is stable, brake a few metres earlier or later at one corner at a time and see what happens to the lap. Changing everything together is confusing: you no longer know what worked. For braking there is the article on kart braking technique.
• 5. Compare your laps with telemetry: the stopwatch tells you how fast you are, telemetry tells you where. Comparing two laps you see in which corner you lose speed, where you brake too early or where you open the throttle late. With a system like the Alfano 7 a few sessions are enough to find the hidden tenths: read more in the guide to Alfano 7 telemetry.
Typical first-day mistakes on a new track
• Pushing to the limit straight away: you memorise mistakes and risk going off track.
• Copying faster drivers without understanding: their line may depend on a different kart, tyres and setup.
• Changing too many things at once: line, braking and setup should be changed one at a time.
• Ignoring the tyres: with cold tyres or wrong pressures the track feels different from what it is. Revise karting tyre pressures.
• Not talking to the technician: after every session describe what you feel: it is the basis for every correction.
Four tracks in Northern Italy: what to know before you go out
South Garda Karting, Lonato del Garda (BS)
1,200 metres with an average width of 9-10 metres. The layout is made of repeated braking zones and close changes of direction: precision at the braking points and clean direction changes are what count here. Full track page: South Garda Karting.

Franciacorta Karting Track, Castrezzato (BS)
1,300 metres, with fast sections, technical sections and above all gradient changes that set it apart from other circuits. Gradients change the load on the kart: uphill and downhill the braking points are not the same as on the flat. Full track page: Franciacorta Karting Track.
Cremona Kart Circuit, San Martino del Lago (CR)
1,224 metres and 16 corners (10 right-handers and 6 left-handers) run clockwise, 8 to 10 metres wide, with a 219-metre main straight leading into hard braking. With so many corners to memorise, the reference points of step 2 are essential. Full track page: Cremona Kart Circuit.

Ala Karting Circuit, Ala (TN)
Over 1,110 metres after the complete rebuild finished in June 2025, with complex corners and marked elevation changes among the mountains of the Vallagarina valley. The elevation changes make it important to look far ahead, towards the corner exit, to anticipate where the kart will go. Full track page: Ala Karting Circuit.

Frequently asked questions
How many laps does it take to learn a new kart track?
It depends on experience, but 2 or 3 sessions are usually enough to build a clean basic line. Getting close to the limit takes more sessions and, above all, comparing your data with telemetry.
Is it worth watching an onboard video before going on track?
Yes. An onboard video helps you memorise the order of the corners and the main braking points, so your first laps confirm your reference points instead of discovering the track.
Is it better to learn a track alone or with a technician?
You can learn on your own, but a technician watching from the side of the track and reading the telemetry spots mistakes straight away and saves you a lot of sessions.
