Rotax water pump: how it works, what to check and when to act

Updated: 3 days ago

When people talk about a Rotax engine they think of the carburettor, spark plug and exhaust valve. The water pump works quietly and you only notice it when something goes wrong: temperature rising, leaks, water where it shouldn't be. Here is how the Rotax water pump works, what to check and when to act.
In short The Rotax water pump is integrated in the engine and driven by the clutch shaft: there are no belts to tension. The most important check is the leakage bore on the crankcase, to be inspected regularly and after every collision. For maximum performance the water should be at around 55 °C. Pump shaft and oil seal are replaced with genuine parts and the dedicated Rotax tool.
How the Rotax water pump works
Coolant flows from the radiator to the water pump, which is driven by the clutch shaft. The pump pushes it through the cylinder and cylinder head and back to the radiator. The thermostat sits in the cylinder head cover: it helps the engine warm up quickly and stay at a constant temperature.

Rotax water pump: no belt to check
Drivers coming from other engines know external pumps driven by an HTD belt on the axle, with a belt to tension and replace. On the Rotax MAX and DD2 it's different: the pump is inside the engine and there is no belt. The things to watch are the seals, the hoses and the temperature.
The check not to skip: the leakage bore
On the crankcase there is a small leakage bore: it is there precisely to show whether a pump seal is leaking. Check it regularly and always right after a collision.
• Dry bore: everything is fine.
• Traces of water or oil: a seal is no longer working properly. Don't keep running and have the engine checked: putting it off can cost much more.
For the complete engine routine read the guide to Rotax engine maintenance.
Temperature and coolant
• The right temperature: for maximum performance the engine should run with the water at around 55 °C.
• Coolant: use distilled water. If the kart is kept below freezing, drain the circuit completely.
• Quantity: about 0.52 litres for the complete circuit with the small radiator, about 0.7 litres with the big one.
• Hoses and clamps: after every collision check that the radiator hoses are tight and there are no leaks, at both the engine and the radiator.
To manage temperature on track there is the guide to the Rotax engine radiator.
Signs that something is wrong
• The temperature rises more than usual on the same track and in the same conditions.
• The coolant level drops from one session to the next.
• Traces of water or oil at the leakage bore or around the pump.
In all these cases it's worth stopping and checking before going back on track.
Genuine Rotax water pump spare parts
For the Rotax MAX you will find the complete Rotax water pump shaft (part 220515). To fit the oil seal correctly you need the dedicated tool: the Rotax water pump oil seal fitting tool (part 676021). For the DD2 there is the complete Rotax DD2 water pump (part 620275). If you have no experience with the engine, leave the job to an engine builder or a Rotax service centre.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Rotax water pump have a belt to tension?
No. On the Rotax MAX and DD2 the water pump is integrated in the engine and driven by the clutch shaft. Pumps with an HTD belt are used on other engines.
What does it mean if water or oil comes out of the leakage bore on the crankcase?
That one of the pump seals is no longer working properly. Check the bore regularly and always right after a collision: if you find water or oil, don't run the engine and have it checked.
What is the right water temperature on a Rotax?
For maximum performance the engine should run with the water at around 55 °C. If it's cold and the engine doesn't get there, partly cover the radiator.
